Standards Writing

WHAT ARE STANDARDS?

Standards are published documents that establish specifications and procedures designed to ensure the reliability of the materials, products, methods, and/or services people use every day. Standards address a range of issues, including but not limited to various procedures to help ensure functionality and compatibility, facilitate interoperability and support health, safety and environmental issues.

Standards form the fundamental building blocks for establishing consistent protocols that can be universally understood and adopted throughout an organization. Many standards are commonly recognized and readily available from established standards writing organizations such as ISA, NFPA, IEEE or IEC. However, some regulatory and compliance agencies with enforceable authority such as OSHA or insurance underwriters, require organizations to develop and comply with their own internal standards to address specific issues unique to operations.
